Little Rock - Lana Clifton

Welcome to Arkansas - Focus on Central Arkansas Lakes and Nature

I thought I would take just a minute to share some information and links with you. You might have done a great deal of research on our beautiful state already, but I thought I might just add to what you have already collected. I updated your search so that new properties that show up will only be very close to or on lakes or rivers.

A couple of notes - The main lakes in Central Arkansas are the ones around Hot Springs. They are Lake Ouachita, Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine. These are all connected and also connect to the Caddo River. Many people use the Caddo River for canoeing and rafting as well as fishing. The medium sized lakes that also have marinas are in Hot Springs Village (Cortez, Coronado, De Soto and Balboa), Lake Maumelle, Lake Conway (more on that in a sec) and Lake Norrell. The large river that runs through Little Rock is the Arkansas River. It is deep and swift and used for goods transport on barges. You can run boats on it, but it can be a dangerous river, so safety is important. There is another lake just southeast of Hot Springs called DeGray. There aren’t many homes actually on the lake, but there are some nice properties nearby. It is another deep lake with large marinas where you can fish for hybrid bass and other large lake fish.

Lake Conway is currently being drained and worked on. I’ll attach an article about what they are doing there. It might be a good opportunity to get a good deal on a place, but it won’t be “nice” until they finish the work on the lake.

Greers Ferry Lake is another large lake within driving distance, but it is about 45 minutes to good shopping and other amenities you might be used to being close to. There are small towns surrounding it and some gorgeous homes, but it is more isolated and a little further north than the others. It is very popular for all kinds of boating, fishing and recreation. The Little Red River is connected to Greers Ferry and is famous for trout fishing.

The towns with a good selection of national chain stores, restaurants, gyms and the arts are going to be Little Rock, Conway and Hot Springs. Cabot also has good shopping and gyms, but is a little short on the arts department.

We still have “dry” counties in Arkansas! These counties don’t have liquor stores, although in most of them, you can buy a drink at a restaurant. I just mention that, because some people like to be a short drive from the nearest watering hole or liquor store.

We have more rain than the average state. We get hot in the summer (but not Arizona hot) and cold in the winter (but not Wisconsin cold). Some years we have several days over 100, and some we don’t. Some years we have snow and/or ice, and some years we don’t. We always drop below freezing at least a few times in the winter. January and February are typically our coldest months. July and August are typically our hottest months. We get spring and fall rains in abundance most years. We have severe weather including tornados, hail and thunderstorms. Most of these are in the spring. Our summer heat is humid. Due to fairly moderate weather, we have a long growing season and an abundance of trees, plants, crops, wildlife and insects. You will need to maintain termite protection on your home. They love our weather. If you are outside in the spring, summer or fall, you will see bugs and all kinds of creatures. We are a rural state with low population and lots of forest and wilderness, so we are home to many living things.

Every type of person lives in Arkansas. We are a diverse state with lots to offer. You will find your people here, no matter who they are. Here are some links to more information.
